In a live-fire evolution, ignition is a controlled operation performed by a dedicated role to ensure the burn starts exactly as planned and under safe conditions. Once the Instructor-in-Charge and Safety Officer have approved proceeding, the ignition is carried out by the Ignition Officer. This person runs the approved ignition plan, controls the ignition source and fuel flow, and times the start so flames develop predictably while all personnel are accounted for and out of danger. The Ignition Officer stays in close coordination with the IIC and Safety Officer and can halt ignition if any risk arises.

The other roles aren’t responsible for starting the fire: the Fire Control team handles suppression readiness and fire control activities, the Entry Officer guides interior entry and attack operations, and the Secondary Pumper provides water supply and pump operations.
